Anesthesia in Dentistry

Today nearly all advertisements of dental clinics attract the visitors with the words "Painless treatment".

Is it always true?

Pain is the main cause that cancels the visit to the dentist. But sooner or later this pain becomes unbearable. The first thing you listen from the visitor that comes to the clinic is the phrase: "Doctor, I’ll give everything but save me from this pain".

First of all let’s discuss modern methods of anesthetic means. Today the most modern and common anesthetic means are considered to be those with the base of Arthicain like ultracain, septhanest, ubisthesin and alfacain. These anesthetics influence for almost 6 hours. This process is held thanks to the presence of vasoconstrictor in the anesthetic. This kind of medicine usually has the sign FORTE (strong) on it. With the presence of Adrenalin in this medicine is explained the faster heart beating and the troubled feeling of the visitor after the injection. Mepivastezin is an anesthetic medicine which is anticipated for those who suffer from such diseases like asthma, allergy, etc where the presence of vasoconstrictors is contradicted.

Ask your dentist what kind of anesthetic he/she uses. In any case inform about the presence or absence of the allergy on this or that medicine. The dentist can pass a scarification test on allergy just on spot. They do some scratches on the arm and fall some drops of the medicine on it, after which they check the reaction of the body. It is also possible that they send you to a more detailed examination to the centre of allergology.

The preference is usually given to so called kompulan anesthetics. The compulan and a needle for only one use are put in the metal medical injector, which often frightens the visitors. There is no need to be afraid. The needle is so thin that the injection is almost painless. You should be prepared that the tactic feeling doesn’t cease. You’ll feel something is being done with your tooth, while during the extraction you’ll have worse feeling.

The anesthesia of upper jaw is less painful. The influence on it is faster than the anesthesia of lower jaw which is usually slower anaesthetized. This is strongly connected with different constructions of bone tissues. While anaesthetizing lower jaw you’ll feel "dumbness" only on the half of the surface of your jaw. During the upper jaw anaesthetizing you’ll feel "dumbness" only in the area of anaesthetized teeth.

If you have been taking anaesthetizing medicine or alcohol during some days before visiting your dentist the anaesthetizing can be less effective. It is almost impossible to anaesthetize entirely if the area of injection is swelled as the inflamed infiltrate that has acid environment in it weakens the alkaline environment of the medicine.

The visitor’s troubled state can also reduce the efficiency of the anesthetics. As it is shown by the experience there is a group of patients who should be injected 3-5 doses in order to achieve the desired result. Usually these are people with unstable state of mind, choleric people.

Let’s resume

  1. Choose a dental clinic where modern means of anesthetizing are used
  2. In any case inform about the presence or absence of the allergy on this or that medicine
  3. The variety of feelings depends on the area of process and diagnostics
  4. Don’t use anesthetics or alcohol before visiting dentist
  5. Pay attention to the problem as the permanent process is treated much more painless than an acute condition
  6. Calm down and be inclined to good results

Of special interest are the visitors who suffer from so called denthofobia (overwhelming fear of dentists).Very few people suffer from this disease but the dentist’s literate approach can lead to excellent results.
